New IITs a disaster: PM's scientific adviser
New IITs a disaster: PM's scientific adviser
NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's initiative to establish eight new Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) has drawn flak from his own scientific adviser C.N.R. Rao, who said on Friday that the opening of so many new IITs is a "disaster".
"Opening so may IITs in one year is a disaster. I had no idea that so many IITs have already come up in our country," he told reporters on the sidelines of an event at the Federation of Indian Cambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI).
Six new IITs - in Orissa, Bihar, Rajasthan, Punjab and Andhra Pradesh - have started operations from the current academic session. India now has 13 IITs.
"This is not a play. To open IITs, you need proper planning. There are makeshift campuses and some are even attending classes in old IITs," said the renowned scientist.
"I came to know about this development after the institutes admitted students. This is sad and I have told the prime minister and even the human resource development minister (Arjun Singh) about this. I am dissatisfied with the developments," said Rao, a visiting professor at Cambridge University.
IITs are premier engineering colleges of the country. Manmohan Singh has already announced that India will have eight new IITs, including the six opened this year, to boost engineering and technology education.

Yep another brainstorm of Arjun Singh.
Announce the setup caring two hoots about whether there is even basic infrastructure to accommodate the new setup.
I think the worse news was that they have even introduced reservation in faculty. That i think is a disaster.

^ they have already stopped da process of taking screening test & final test (dat was happened at our times)
Now reservation process....
Then new IITs wid no Infrastructure
It's a shame ...
BTW
after some yrs. more IITians will pass out ,many can fulfill their dream getting into IIT.....
where in our case

Re: New IITs a disaster: PM's scientific adviser
IITs were a disaster to begin with. A whole academic outfit designed solely for the bourgeois and their "firangi" ambitions. What is it, if not a terrible waste of taxpayers' money on a few, so they can go earn their fortune abroad?
Either slap onto those a compulsory service to their fatherland for at least 5 years, or make 'em pay for their elite education - the whole of it.

Re: New IITs a disaster: PM's scientific adviser
aaaah this was to be expected, awesome idea that, to start 6 premier institutes without so much as a freaking place for the students to sit.
I'm glad that i got in this year, it still means something to be able to get into an IIT and pass out of one. Now with 13 of them (6 without a campus) the overall Rep will come down, i mean sure, the oldie IIT's will still be respected, but even that will be tempered by the quality(or lack of it) of the new ones.
The quality has to go down, with just 7 IIT's there is a faculty crunch, with 6 more, the only option available will be to recruit professors of a lower standard than usual, which negates the whole idea of establishing that institute as an IIT, and if faculty from existing institutes are forced to go there, then even the old institutes will fall in quality.
When the fck are they gonna realize that even when all these institutes were started, they were just iit's by name, over time they evolved into IIT's. – a standard. Just constructing a bunch of buildings, populating it with equipment and calling it an IIT does not make it one.
AFAIK the faculty quota has not been implemented yet, and there will be feirce oppositon from the current faculty, on any such move.
